Ubuntu goes in the Robot Business
Ubuntu is currently exploring a somewhat virgin market with its new operating system called Snappy for short (Snappy Ubuntu Core). Snappy is mainly designed as an operating system and method of controlling electronic devices and robots, such as drones.
Canonical, the company that own Ubuntu has stated that Snappy is their smallest and safest operating system yet. Besides the security, we’re all accustomed to it will have continuous updates and an array of apps available on an app market of sorts. This operating system targets developers who want to make their devices more autonomous in their activities.
The first Ubuntu-powered device is the Erle-Copter which is basically a drone with a Snappy OS. Victor Mayoral Vilches, CEO of Erle Robotics is very happy about this new OS and has stated that an open platform OS will draw more enthusiasts and experts to work on apps which in turn will take this domain further.
There are other ways of programing electronics and robots however these require rather extensive knowledge of both software and hardware programing. The Ubuntu Snappy offers a lighter alternative, especially for those accustomed to programing in this environment.
Another device which will shortly run on Snappy is the Ninja Sphere which basically is a controller for all electronics and smart-appliances in a house. Imagine being able to easily create and app (or download it) that through a controller will allow you to program you fridge or washing machine to do whatever you want. The Ninja Sphere can also be connected to the sensors in a house and through the correct app you can program them as you wish.
