Rosetta space probe lands on its destination
The European space agency which had spent decades on solving a major problem has now finally got the fruit of the patience. The mission of the agency also known as Rosetta was to land and intercept on Comet 67P or Churyumov-Gerasimenko. But the team never knew for certain that this mission would be successful till the very last moment when the probe had landed on the comet. On the 6th of August, for about 23 minutes, which were far more than eternity for these scientists, everyone was waiting for a signal of success from the probe.
It has been quite an occupied year for Rosetta. This spacecraft was made from two and a half years of dedication in January 2012, and has ever since been putting on the brakes and been ready for this week’s extreme maneuvers. This has settled it into a roughly triangular orbit of about 100km ahead of its exact target.
The more recent stage of this journey is not the most daring one after all. That would come during a series of carefully timed moves over the next two or three months, as the spacecraft moves in to approach within 30km of its target. From this vantage, it will survey Comet 67P’s rugged terrain to select a landing site for Philae, a lander that it will release in early November 2014.
For now, the team is rest assured that they can work for a little longer on this project as it has succeeded somehow and has borne the fruits of their hard work!
